Report – Vehicles in use, Europe 2018

The 2018 edition of ACEA’s ‘Vehicles in use’ report provides an extensive overview of the European motor vehicle fleet. Per country, it shows the number of vehicles in use for each segment – covering passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, as well as buses – and how those numbers have developed over recent years.

The report, which can be downloaded by clicking here, also provides interesting statistics per vehicle segment for each country, such as: the average age (as well as the year of first registration), fuel type, and the number of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants.

In addition, the ‘Vehicles in use’ report looks at the number of cars per household in various countries as well as the average distance travelled (both for petrol and diesel cars). A sneak peek at some of the report’s findings:

  • The EU passenger car fleet grew by 5.7% over the last five years; the number of vehicles on the road went from 243 to 257 million (page 3).
  • There are 6.3 million trucks on the EU’s roads. With more than 1 million trucks, Poland has the largest truck fleet in the EU, followed closely by Germany and Italy (page 5).
  • In Hungary nearly half of all households (48.3%) do not have a car and in Denmark almost 40%. By contrast, more than 30% of French families have two cars (page 17).
  • Diesel-powered light commercial vehicles are dominant in all EU countries except for Greece: almost 90% of the EU van fleet runs on diesel (page 13).
  • Nearly all trucks in the European Union run on diesel (96.1%), petrol fuels only 1% (page 14).
