Nearly half of all new cars run on diesel. In the EU‐15, diesel’s market share fell from 52.1% to 49.9% between 2015 and 2016. This drop was completely offset by an increase in the sales of petrol vehicles.
Quick facts:

- The total share of alternative fuel vehicles fell from 4.5% of the market in 2015 to 4.2% last year.
- Diesel is still the most popular fuel among buyers of new cars, accounting for 49.9% of the EU-15 market in 2016.
