Transport policy

Transport policy concerns the regulatory frameworks that affect the use and modal mix of various forms of transport, be they road, sea, air or rail, rather than rules that prescribe product design or technology. A European transport policy has been evolving since the 1990s as a consequence of the gradual emergence and harmonisation of the single market.
A successful transport policy should be built around three pillars: economic growth, social welfare and environmental sustainability. A vibrant, modern and accessible road network is vital to ensuring that these three aims are met. Further, transport policy must be predicated on the understanding that transport modes are generally complimentary and that competition for the transport of certain commodities is comparatively low.
ACEA and its members are heavily involved with discussions at EU level on how to lower barriers to transport across the EU. Accessible, affordable, safe and environmentally-friendly transport are objectives that Europe’s automobile industry hopes to meet through cooperation with other stakeholders in the sector.
